How many times have you said to yourself, “If only I could catch a glimpse into the future”? It’s likely that we’ve all had that wistful sentiment at one time or another.

The Stock Market Crash of 1929 was a precursor to the Great Depression, a period of such great destitution and hardship; it sent shockwaves throughout the country.

So how did Gann, a former cotton warehouse clerk from East Lufkin, Texas, correctly predict the market crash that would trigger our nation’s greatest economic disaster?

More than anything else, Gann was an insightful observer. As a student of the markets and human nature, he committed his life to gaining an understanding of what lay behind market movements. This pursuit led him to develop several theories that had their basis in mathematics.

Gann traveled to England to study English price history and also spent 10 years of deep study in New York’s Astor Library in order to prove his theories on market activity. In England, there was a much longer historical record of financial markets and price history compared to the relatively young U.S. markets.

The notion that everything that happens in the marketplace has
historical reference points and has occurred in the past
became a guiding principle for Gann.

The result of his pursuits was the development of five primary analytical methods which he used to produce market forecasts – the Master Time Factor, time periods, seasonal studies, valuation, and price formations. At the end of each year, Gann would publish a forecast in chart form of the price changes that would take place during the 12 months of the following calendar year.
